Beautiful New Artwork Graces Yarrow's Entrance

20 August 2008 - Madras, OR - Madras Public Arts Commission, City of Madras and Yarrow today announced that the second major piece of public art was installed in Madras last Friday. The piece, entitled "Red Tail", was created by Pullman, WA artist Miles Pepper, and sits in the roundabout at the intersection of City View and Yarrow.

"Making a piece of art like this available to the entire community is a monumental accomplishment," said Cameron Craig, project manager for Yarrow, which provided funding for the project. "Miles' hawk sculpture provides a mix of the beauty of the high desert with intricate futuristic mechanics. It is the perfect sculpture for Madras."

"Red Tail" is a giant metal hawk boasting a 15-foot wingspan that acts as a weather vane, with wings that move and fold back in the wind. It is perched atop a 25-foot steel sculpture in the shape of an arrowhead.

Miles Pepper creates kinetic mechanisms set into motion by the natural movement of air.
